Caring for your Jewelery


Did you know that rings are the most abused/exposed pieces of all jewelry? It is recommended that you have your jewelry cleaned and checked at least twice a year by a qualified jeweler to ensure the best possible care for your treasures. We offer free cleaning and checking of your jewelry while you wait!

Here are a few tips to help you keep your precious jewelry sparkling and bright between trips to your local jeweler!
  • If you would like to clean your jewelry at home, ordinary dish detergent and a bowl of water is all you need. Simply dip and scrub with an old soft toothbrush or other type of soft brush and scrub gently behind the stone where debris can collect. Rinse, (with the drain plugged) and pat dry with a soft cloth.
  • Home ultrasonic cleaners should be used with caution. It can be used on unadorned gold jewelry, Rubies, Sapphires, Diamonds, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnets, and Chrysoberyl, but gemstones like Emerald, Tourmaline, Peridot, Pearls, Coral, Lapis Lazuli, gems that have numerous inclusions, and Turquoise could be damaged by this machine.
  • Remove your jewelry before any rigorous activities.
  • Household chemicals, especially all forms of bleaches and chlorines, can be very damaging to your jewelry. Be sure to remove them before using cleaning products, hair care products, fragrances, and cosmetics.
  • Jewelry should be stored in a cloth-lined box or pouch and keep them separated from other pieces as the may scratch each other.
  • If you are planning on swimming or using a hot tub you should remove your jewelry as the chlorine can damage your mounting and/or gemstone.
  • Don't wear fine jewelry when doing housework or gardening, you could easily damage it.
  • Do get your pearls re-strung every two years or annually with frequent use.
  • Don't use toothpaste; the abrasives can damage softer gems and metals.
  • Always make your jewelry the LAST thing you put on. Store your jewelry away from heat and sunlight the gemstones may fade!
  • Opaque stones like lapis lazuli, turquoise, opals, and malachite require special care. Never use any harsh chemical solutions. These gems should be wiped clean gently with a moist cloth. These stones can be porous and will absorb chemicals, even soap, and they may build up inside the stone, discoloring it or making it dull.
  • Organic gems like pearls, coral, and amber should only be wiped clean with a moist cloth. These gems are soft and porous.
